| Canoe Trip: In the winter of
2004, Myrna Schacherl (a board member for A on A) suggested to
the board that Accent on Ability organize a camping trip for consumer
survivors. Dieter Hahn (another board member) picked up on the
idea, and Myrna and Dieter visited an outdoors show and began
collecting names of possible outfitters to guide the trip. Dieter
continued this organizational work, assisted at times by Myrna,
and eventually an outfitter, Paddlefoot,
was selected and hired to take the consumer /survivors on a trip.
Staff at A-WAY were encouraged to apply to go on the trip.
Eventually the participants were narrowed down to Dieter, Myrna,
3 couriers from A-WAY: Neil, Ed, and Abdul, and a consumer/survivor
recruited from outside of A-WAY: Litsa.
July 23 to 25 of 2004, Paddlefoot took us to the Barron Canyon
in Algonquin Park, to a canoe-in campsite. Total distance traveled
was about 15 km. We had 4 wonderful guides. Reviews of the trip
are good.
